Hamburger and Fries Visual Aids

Kids love to draw and draw small. Sure its cute, but when it comes to makin' art projects I'm always trying to get my students to fill the page and think about the details. I have finally come up with a few terms that are fun, engaging and easy for my students to understand. The best part is, of course, is that it works! It has my kiddos producing better drawings.

Everyone loves a big, juicy, BEEFY burger. So in a fun and deep voice I explain BIG AND BEEFY drawings. They fill the page and have lots of details. I also demo this on my smart board/document camera. Then I show them a 'wimpy puny' drawing (you know, something small and lacking detail), using a small and high pitched voice. Usually these type of drawings take no time at all. I call these drawings wimpy puny and compare them to cold floppy french fries at the bottom of the cup! EW!

My students seem to find it humorous and they 'get it'. This has really come in handy lately as we are wrapping up projects and I have lots of students who need something else to work on before we start a new project. I use fellow Instagram and art teacher friend (Kaitlin Edington's) Popsicle stick drawing prompts and my students love it. Having the kids make big beefy drawings also takes more time and keeps them from CONSTANTLY coming to my desk saying "I'm done'... worst words in the art room if you ask me! You can download your own and see how they work in your room!
